What do you get a 7 year old for a birthday present?
Jackson Considine, son of Mike and Sarah Considine 7th
birthday was celebrated with many of his classmates
from the Lathrop Elementary School , along with
cousins and his grandparents. His only request for a
gift was that everyone brought him a blanket that he
would donate to the American Red Cross of
Susquehanna County to be used for victims of
disaster. “My mom had called the office to ask what
I could do to help the American Red Cross for my
birthday that was on January 21st.” said
Jackson . “It made me feel happy because it is good
to give our blankets to people who need them, that
don’t have homes, have had a fire, or had a flood”
Jackson said with a smile. Jackson , along with his
grandparents stopped by the American Red Cross with
18 blankets to drop off for the chapter to use for
families affected by disaster.
After a disaster, such as a home fire, trained Red
Cross interviewers meet one on one with families to
determine immediate needs. They are assisted with
the basics; food, shelter, and clothing. But the
Susquehanna County Chapter also gives each family
member a new blanket. The chapter has been running
short on new blankets.
From December into January the Chapter had 8 fires,
with 39 residents- 15 of which were children. The
chapter also assisted a family that was evacuated
due to gas fumes with 2 adults and 3 children
residing in the home. “When Jackson came in with his
grandparents to give his birthday gift of 18
blankets, he seen first hand that there were only a
couple blankets still available for families in
need. It is special people, such as volunteers that
do things to help our chapter. Jackson is one of
those heroes extraordinaire that helps with the
constant need for comfort items that for someone
with only the clothes on their back, truly
appreciate the warmth of a blanket.” said Tami A
Cortright, Program Director Susquehanna County
Chapter American Red Cross.

Red Cross wins second place in Bullseye Gives campaign
Thursday, May 28, 2009 —
Thanks to thousands of supporters, the American
Red Cross won 26 percent of the votes in Target’s Bullseye Gives
Facebook campaign.
More than 75,000 votes were cast for
the Red Cross, which earned the humanitarian organization a share of $793,942.
Nine other non-profits competed for a piece of Target’s $3 million donation.
The Red Cross will use this donation to
change lives around the country and around the world. With the support of the
American public, every day victims of disasters get crucial help in their time
of need, military members and their families are connected during a personal
crisis, children are vaccinated against deadly diseases, patients receive
life-saving blood transfusions—and much more.
You can instantly keep track of what is going on at the Red Cross, meet other

Are You Prepared?
Tuesday, June 02, 2009 —
Did you know that more than35 million Americans live in regions most
threatened by Atlantic hurricanes? Hurricane season began on June 1 and is here
to stay through the end of November. According to the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the 2009 season will be near normal with four
to seven hurricanes likely. Predictions call for nine to 14 named storms and 1
to 3 major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher. The American Red Cross is
urging those who live in areas prone to big storms to prepare now.
